Track clicks on the links you send

When you share a link in a LinkedIn message sent through Swimlane, you find out whether the contact opened it. There's nothing to switch on: every link is tracked automatically.

How it works

  1. You send a message that contains a link, such as a case study, a booking page or an article.
  2. Before the message leaves, Swimlane replaces each link with a short tracked link made for this contact: the Swimlane address followed by /link/ and an eight-letter code.
  3. When the contact clicks it, they go through Swimlane and land straight on the original page.
  4. Swimlane records the click on the contact.

In the Swimlane inbox you always see the original link, never the short one. In LinkedIn's own messaging, you and your contact see the short link.

Which messages are tracked

Links are replaced in every message Swimlane sends on your behalf:

  • your replies in the inbox
  • the first message you send to a contact
  • messages sent by a campaign step
  • messages sent to several contacts at once, for example to a whole pipeline column

Only links that start with http:// or https:// are replaced. A link typed as example.com or www.example.com stays as it is and isn't tracked. Messages you write directly on LinkedIn aren't tracked either.

What a click records

  • An entry in the contact's Activity tab: [First name] clicked your link, with the address of the page they opened.
  • The contact's last interaction date is updated.
  • The AI analysis may refresh if it's more than 7 days old (see Understand the AI contact analysis).

Each contact gets their own short link for each address. If you send the same link to the same person again, the same short link is reused. The Activity tab shows one entry per contact and per link, however many times they click it.

Your own clicks don't count

If you click one of your tracked links in a browser where you're logged in to Swimlane, the click isn't counted. Your curiosity doesn't show up as interest from the contact.

A click from a browser where you aren't logged in to Swimlane, such as the LinkedIn app on your phone, can't be recognised as yours. It's recorded as a click from the contact. To check a link, open it from the Swimlane inbox, where you see the original address, or from a browser where you're logged in.

What it does not do

  • It doesn't track opens. Swimlane can't tell whether a message was read, only whether a link in it was clicked.
  • It can't tell who clicked. A click is attributed to the contact the link was made for. If they forward the link, the next person's click is recorded as theirs.
  • It doesn't notify you. Clicks appear in the Activity tab. There is no email or push notification.
  • It doesn't track links in connection request notes. Only messages are affected.

Tips

  • Share one clear link per message. You'll know exactly what caught the contact's interest.
  • A click is a good moment to follow up. Look at the Activity tab before replying, and mention what they opened only if it feels natural.
  • Set a reminder after sending an important link, and check the Activity tab when it comes back (see Set a reminder on a conversation).
