Connect your LinkedIn account

Swimlane works through your own LinkedIn account. You connect it once, by signing in to LinkedIn in a secure window: no browser extension, no cookies to copy by hand. It usually takes about two minutes.

Before you start

  • Have your LinkedIn email and password ready.
  • Keep your phone or authenticator app nearby in case LinkedIn asks for a verification.
  • Allow pop-ups for Swimlane in your browser: the LinkedIn sign-in opens in a separate window.

Steps

  1. On the Connect your LinkedIn screen, click Connect your LinkedIn account. You see this screen right after creating your account, and again whenever Swimlane needs you to reconnect.
  2. In the window that opens, titled Connect LinkedIn (this page is in English), enter your LinkedIn Email and Password, then click Connect. The button switches to "Connecting…" while LinkedIn answers. Don't click again.
  3. If LinkedIn asks for a verification, a Verification Required page appears:
    • Approval in the LinkedIn app: open the LinkedIn mobile app and approve the sign-in. The page checks for your approval every few seconds, so there is nothing to click.
    • Code by email, SMS or authenticator app: type the code in Verification Code and click Verify. Checking the code can take 10 to 20 seconds; click only once.
  4. Account Connected appears, the window closes by itself and Swimlane moves on: to Choose your plan if you are signing up, or straight back into the app.

What Swimlane syncs first

  • Your profile. Your first name, last name, photo and LinkedIn identifier are filled in from LinkedIn when they are still empty in Swimlane. Values you already entered are kept.
  • Your conversations. The first time you open the Inbox, Swimlane goes back through your LinkedIn messaging history, up to 6 months, and creates a contact for every person you talk to. Conversations appear progressively as each batch arrives. Afterwards, only the most recent conversations are refreshed, every 15 to 30 seconds while the inbox is open.
  • Your LinkedIn headline and About section are read when you fill in the Let's get to know you questionnaire, so its questions match what you actually do.

Good to know

  • Your LinkedIn password is only used to sign in. What Swimlane keeps is the resulting LinkedIn session, stored encrypted.
  • Swimlane reaches LinkedIn through a residential connection located in your country, based on where you were when you signed in to Swimlane. This keeps your activity consistent with your usual location.
  • Each Swimlane user connects one LinkedIn account.
  • The sign-in window is valid for 15 minutes. After that, it shows "This link has expired or is invalid.": close it and click Connect your LinkedIn account again.
  • Swimlane keeps checking the connection while you use it. If LinkedIn ends the session, you are asked to sign in again (see Reconnect LinkedIn when the session expires).

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing opens when you click the button. Your browser blocked the pop-up. Allow pop-ups for Swimlane and click again.
  • "Invalid email or password. Please try again." Check that you can sign in on linkedin.com with the same credentials, then retry.
  • "Invalid code. Please try again." Type the most recent code LinkedIn sent you.
  • The LinkedIn app notification never arrives. Click I didn't receive the notification. After several sign-in attempts, LinkedIn temporarily stops sending verification prompts. Wait 24 hours before starting the connection again.
  • A "Connection Failed" page appears. Click Try Again. If the window has been open for more than 15 minutes, close it and restart from Swimlane instead.
  • You closed the window by mistake. Click Connect your LinkedIn account again; nothing is lost.
